COUNSELING CENTER OFFERING NEW GRIEF GROUP

• What: This five week group provides a space and place for students to process the loss of a loved one.  The group will include psychoeducation and group member discussion around topics such as common reactions to grief, identifying social support and healing paths, and moving forward in the world after the loss.  Group is open to both undergraduates and graduate students.  No group screening is necessary but loss should be within the last year.
• When: Thursdays, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., begins May 2, 2013

UC PRESIDENT'S POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM WORKSHOP

• What: The UC President's Post Doctoral Fellowship Program provides an exciting year-long research and professional development experience at a UC Campus. Gain insight from UCI faculty about the purpose and rewards-- such as salary, health benefits, and up to $4,000 for research-related and program expenses-- of the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The program is open to postdoctoral scholars and graduate students enrolled in doctoral granting programs in all fields ranging from the Arts, Humanities, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences to Biological Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, and Physical Sciences. The deadline for this year's competition is November 1st.
• When: Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 10:00am to 11:30am
• Where: Graduate Resource Center (Room C114 in the UCI Student Center, Level 1, next to the NACS computer lab).

DEPARTMENT OF CAMPUS RECREATION OPEN HOUSE

• What: The Department of Campus Recreation is inviting the community to participate in a free open house event at the ARC. This is an exciting opportunity for the public to experience some of what the ARC has to offer. Guests will be treated to a free exercise class with Campus Rec's, Aileen Sheron. Come take Aileen's Total Body Conditioning Class, tour the ARC, and use the complete facility. Watch a short cooking demonstration in our classroom-kitchen, and learn how to make delicious spring rolls.
• Who: Aileen is a well-known fitness celebrity who has made many TV and radio appearances as a fitness expert and is a contributor to several fitness publications.  She has starred in fifteen exercise videos; her Weight Watchers Low Impact Aerobics Workout was rated #1 by Consumer Reports.  She has trained instructors around the world, and now teaches the ARC's most popular exercise classes. Come workout with Aileen!

PANEL DISCUSSION II: ONLINE, HYBRID/FLIPPED, TECHNOLOGICALLY ENHANCED

• What: Panelists Prof. Maria Pantelia (Humanities), Prof. Alan Terricciano (Arts), Dr. Debra Mauzy-Melitz (Biological Sciences), and Dr. Teresa Dalton (Social Ecology) will discuss their teaching experiences using the online |“flipped” or hybrid | or tech-enhanced format.  Light refreshments and desserts will be served.

SUNSET KAYAK RETREAT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

• What: CARE, Campus Recreation, and Palo Verde Housing are collaborating to provide partners with an opportunity to challenge themselves by exploring communication and trust in a new way. Partners will have the opportunity to end the day by participating in a sunset kayak ride together. Cost is $25/couple.
• When: Saturday, June 1 from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m.

SCIENCE OUTSIDE THE LAB

A policy immersion program in Washington, D.C. for graduate students.

Science Outside the Lab, presented by Arizona State University's Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO), explores the relationships among science, policy, and societal outcomes in a place where many important decisions about these things are made - Washington, D.C.  During the two-week workshop, students will meet and interact with the people who fund, regulate, shape, critique, publicize and study science, including congressional staffers, funding agency officers, lobbyists, regulators, journalists, academics, museum curators and others.

When: Monday June 3 - Friday, June 14, 2013 (arrival on Sunday June 2; departure on Saturday June 15)

COOKING CLASS PARTNER RETREAT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

• What: This event is hosted by CARE, in collaboration with Campus Recreation, and Palo Verde Housing. During this retreat, partners will gain tools in communication strategies, learn how to fight fair, develop interpersonal assertiveness, build positive and supportive relationships, and have the opportunity to cook a meal together. Cost is $25/couple.

• What: The Fulbright program manager, Walter Jackson, announced that the online application is now open! Please find the application here.  To help make your Personal Statement and Grant Purpose as completive as possible, UCLA Graduate Division and the Graduate Writing Center will be cohosting 3 workshops. The workshops are for potential Fulbright applicants interested in learning how to write a successful Personal Statement and Grant Purpose.

• What: A new course in communication has been developed by Drama Professor Eli Simon and is being taught under his supervision by MFA Actors for graduate students in all disciplines.

UC EXPANDS CHILDCARE BENEFITS TO GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHERS

• What: As part of its commitment to support students in their academic pursuits, the University of California will help graduate student researchers cover the cost of childcare starting fall 2013. UC understands that some GSRs are parents who juggle school and family life. The university also recognizes that rising childcare costs can pose a significant financial burden for students, which can affect their academic focus.The university’s new childcare benefit will provide much-needed financial aid and support for GSRs. Depending on the campus, GSRs will be offered a grant or will be reimbursed up to $600 per quarter or $900 per semester for childcare costs. UC already offers this childcare benefit to union-represented academic student employees, such as teaching assistants, tutors and readers.
• When: All UC campuses will offer the childcare benefit starting this fall and fund it at their location. UCLA will begin offering the benefit in July 2013.

This information session will cover the UC President’s Post Doctoral Fellowship program. This fellowship provides a year-long research and professional development experience at a UC campus. Fellows are hosted by a department/program and mentored by one or more faculty. The award provides salary, health benefits, and up to $4,000 for research-related and program expenses. DID YOU KNOW: Whether you are considering an academic or non-academic position, the Graduate Resource Center provides Weekly Drop-In Career Advising   for graduate students at all stages of their academic journey.  This includes CV or resume review, discussing job search strategies, and preparing for interviews. Meetings are conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis on Wednesdays from 3 – 4pm.

SUMMER TEACHING OPPORTUNITY

• What: As a leading educational institute in the San Gabriel Valley for 26 years, we are seeking innovative, dedicated and qualified teachers to join our faculty at the locations of Alhambra, Arcadia, Temple City, and San Marino. 32 to 35 hrs per week are possibly available for strong candidates for the summer term. Hired teachers must sign a contract to commit to the summer positions from June to August, 2013. Possible long-term afternoon school teaching positions are also available for fall and spring semester. Starting salary is competitive with other companies. 
• When: Working hours are Mondays to Fridays. Morning and/ or afternoon classes with 3 to 4 hrs per shift are available. Possible Saturday teaching positions are available too. Teaching hours depend on subject proficiency and teaching experience.

Open positions are:

1. SAT/ PSAT test prep teachers
2. English teachers in high school/ middle school/ elementary level
3. Math teachers of Pre-calculus, Algebra II/ I, Geometry, Pre-algebra
4. Sciences teachers of high school biology and chemistry

Position Requirements:

1.     Applicant must be hard-working and enthusiastic teaching professional with excellent subject knowledge and sound understanding of the curriculum.

2.     A Bachelor’s Degree is necessary, Master Degree or above preferred. In-classroom teaching experience is a plus!

3.     Employees must have a reliable source of transportation.

4.     SAT teaching candidates must have competitive test scores (such as in SAT/ GRE/ GMAT) or a diagnostic test is required in interview. 

5.     All candidates are required to do a mock teaching in interview.

ROLEX ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2014 AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE

• What: Rolex is accepting applications for the 2014 Awards for Enterprise, which are dedicated to young candidates aged between 18 and 30. The Rolex Awards support pioneering work in five areas: applied technology, cultural heritage, environment, exploration and discovery, and science and health. However, projects may be submitted in almost any area of activity, provided they have the potential to bring benefits for mankind. Projects are assessed based on the feasibility, originality, potential for sustained impact, and, above all, on the candidate’s own spirit of enterprise.
