Hours & Location

The Graduate Resource Center (GRC) is open Monday through Friday from 9AM - 5PM. The GRC is located in the UCI Student Center in room C114.

Workshops

The GRC offers workshops to help graduate students and postdocs with all aspects of their academic life while at UC Irvine and beyond. Major topics include professional development, writing skills, work-life balance and funding opportunities. Previous workshops addressed stress management, resume building, public speaking, grant writing and adjusting to new postdoc/faculty positions. The GRC works with other UC Irvine service centers to offer in-depth workshops on alternative careers, health education, cultural diversity and civic engagement. Topics vary across quarters, and the GRC staff will work with organizations or campus departments that would like to develop and host a workshop on any area of graduate/postdoc life. Upcoming workshops can be found on the Graduate Division

calendar.

Writing Tutors

The need for writing assistance is a top priority for the graduate student population. The Graduate Division developed a writing tutorial program, housed in the GRC. Advanced graduate students employed by the Graduate Division function as tutors. Individual tutoring in both science and humanities writing styles is available to all registered graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.  Assistance is offered in a variety of areas including:

  • Support for writing fellowship applications
  • Journal publications
  • Academic course papers
  • Dissertation/Thesis proposals
  • Teaching philosophies and personal statements for job applications

Individual appointments are available by calling the GRC (949-824-3849).

Throughout the academic year, the writing tutors present workshops focusing on specific writing tasks. See the Graduate Division calendar for dates.

Work-life Balance

Managing the demands in your professional and personal life plays a vital role in your graduate or postdoc career. Time management, stress management, recreation and family are important life components. Juggling these domains can be difficult for those in a research-intensive environment. UC Irvine’s graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to attend workshops on how to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
