California Community College Internship Program US 297
Description
Quick Links
The California Community College Internship Program (CCCIP) offers qualified full time UCI Ph.D. and M.F.A. students interested in teaching, or administration the opportunity to learn about faculty life, governance, and teaching at a local community college. A graduate degree from a research institution generally does not provide adequate preparation for a career in teaching; this program addresses this lack of experience.
Selected UCI graduate students will be partnered with faculty at community colleges affiliated with UCI for a period of two to three quarters. In the fall quarter students will undertake orientation to the community college and the faculty or administrative partner, observing in the classroom, attending college faculty meetings as appropriate, and conducting preliminary planning. Winter and/or spring, students engage in substantive teaching, extracurricular support, and other aspects of community college responsibility.
Students are required to commit to the program for a minimum of two quarters and a maximum of three in an academic year. They are matched with community college faculty and administrators on the basis of shared disciplines and goals. Together, choosing from a menu of suggested activities, the faculty and graduate students develop a contract, agreeing on a variety of mutually beneficial activities that will prepare the student for a professional career in a community college. Students will register for 2-8 units per quarter, depending on the number of hours involved, and will receive a certificate upon completing a minimum of 40 hours over the course of the academic year. This is not a paid internship and is for students looking to explore and expand their career opportunities in teaching.
