SURF Application
Eligibility
- Minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better Students must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors and must be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year college or university
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident of U.S.
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing a doctoral degree
- Socioeconomic or educational disadvantages will be considered.
Evaluation and Selection of Scholars
Application will be evaluated by a UCI review committee taking into consideration the following issues:
- successful efforts at overcoming socioeconomic or other educational disadvantages in pursuing their academic objectives (such as first in family to attend a university, attended an under-performing high school, etc.)
- career focus consistent with program goals
- outstanding potential for leadership
- evidenced of scholarly achievement
- commitment of the applicant to the goals of the program
- strong potential for acceptance to a graduate program
- letter of recommendation from a faculty/staff member
Application Procedure
ALL application materials MUST be submitted in ONE envelope and MUST include the following:
- A completed application form
- A two-page personal statement
- An unofficial transcript of all college coursework
- One letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can best assess your ability for academic research and your motivation for graduate school
Completed application packets must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) in the Graduate Division by February 27 of the same calendar year as the Summer Research Program. Students will be notified by mail.
NOTE: The application deadline for the 2009 summer program has been extended to March 13, 2009.
