Graduate Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship
Introduction
The Graduate Dean is pleased to announce a fellowship for students nearing completion of their dissertations. The Dean will make up to 25 of these one-quarter awards for AY 2009-2010. This award has been developed as a complement to the Frances Benton Fellowship, which is effective spring quarter, and is being offered to free students who are nearing the filing stage of their dissertation from non-research related employment.
Award Amount & Terms
- $10,000 for Fall 2009, Winter 2010 or Spring 2010 to be used as a stipend or stipend plus fees.
Eligibility Criteria
- Academic merit.
- Need for release from non-research related employment.
- Realistic expectation that the student is near degree completion.
- Doc 2A students (students who are more than nine quarters beyond advancement) are eligible, but will receive no further university support after receipt of this award.
Stipulations
- One-Quarter Award: Full time Ph.D. students who are nearing the completiong of their dissertation must graduate during the 2009-2010 academic year, including Summer 2010.
- Students holding this award shall not be employed as a TA/Associate/Reader/Tutor.
- Students holding this award may be employed as a GSR at up to 24% ONLY if the research is related strictly to their dissertation. Approval of the Acting Dean of Graduate Division is required.
- Students receiving this award are required to file their dissertation during the 2009-2010 academic year, including Summer 2010. This must be stipulated to in the letter of nomination. Award funds will be returned by the school to Graduate Division in the event that the student does not meet this requirement.
School Nomination Package
- The nomination package must be sent by the Associate Dean who should also rank order all the nominations for their school and include a statement in support of the ranking explaining the rationale.
- Individual nominations should be accompanied by a letter from the student's Doctoral Committee Chair justifying the nomination and stipulating a timeline for dissertation completion. Letters for Doc 2A students should also include information as the the reason for the student's Doc 2A status.
- The package should also include a letter from the student with a brief non-technical description of the status of their research as well as an explanation of how the fellowship will help them complete their work within the specified time frame. The student must also indicate the academic quarter they would like to receive the award.
- A current version of the student's curriculum vitae (CV) must be included.
Nomination Process: (Last Updated: May 8, 2009)
- Departments are to complete the nomination form for each nominee.
- The nomination form is a fillable/savable Word documents and can be found on the Graduate Division Web site: Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship Nomination Form
- Save nomination forms in Word as "GDDF - SID#.doc" (e.g. "GDDF - 12345678.doc")
- Print the nomination form and gather original signatures
- Scan all documents to a single PDF file for each nominee once forms are final with signatures, in this order:
- Signed nomination form
- Letter from the student nominee describing their dissertation project, progress to date, detailed plan with timeline for completion and explanation of how the fellowship will help them complete their work within the specified time frame
- Letter of nomination from doctoral committee chair, including Doc 2A information when appropriate
- Student's current curriculum citae (CV)
- Save the new PDF file as "GDDF - SID#.pdf" (e.g. "GDDF - 12345678.pdf")
- Prepare to send as follows when all documentation is complete::

Deadline
- All AY 2009-2010 nomination materials must be received in the Graduate Division office no later than noon on Friday, May 22, 2009. Please submit electronically to Long Nguyen at nguyen.long@uci.edu.
- Incomplete nominations packets will not be reviewed
- No exceptions to this deadline will be considered
