Miguel Velez Fellowship

Introduction

UCI's Graduate Division plans to award up to eight Miguel Velez Fellowships for academic year 2009-2010. The fellowship is intended to provide support to students who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise. This award provides a $10,000.00 stipend payable in two installments of $5,000 each during the Winter 2010 and Spring 2010 academic quarter. Award will be given to those students who have not previously received this award. Students must be enrolled full-time (in a minimum of 12 units) in the academic quarter in which the student chooses to take the award. Please note that this award cannot be deferred to a subsequent year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Miguel Velez Fellowship, the nominee must be a citizen and resident from a Latin America country with preference for students from Colombia.

Academic units may nominate outstanding students who meet the criteria. To be considered, all individual student nominations must include the following:

All AY 2009-10 nomination materials must be received in the Graduate Division no later than noon on Friday, October 30, 2009. Applications must be submitted via the student's home department. Awards will be announced as soon thereafter as possible.

Nomination Process: (last updated October 14, 2009)

  1. Departments to complete the new nomination form for each nominee
    1. The new nomination form is a fillable/savable Word documents and can be found on the Graduate Division Web site: Miguel Velez Fellowship Nomination Form
    2. Click here for some instructions on using Word-based data entry forms
  2. Save nomination forms in Word as "VELEZ - SID#.doc" (e.g. "VELEZ - 12345678.doc")
  3. Print the nomination form and gather original signatures
  4. Scan all documents to a single PDF file for each nominee once forms are final with signatures, in this order:
    1. Nomination form
    2. Letter of nomination
    3. Proof/letter of citizenship
  5. Save the new PDF file as before, "VELEZ - SID#.pdf" (e.g. "VELEZ - 12345678.pdf")
  6. Prepare to send as follows when all documentation is complete::
    1. Email to Nguyen.Long@uci.edu:
      1. Each original Word.doc nomination form
      2. Each PDF packet (packet to include items listed above)
  7. DEADLINE to submit nominations to the Graduate Division: Friday October 30, 2009
    1. Incomplete nominations packets will not be reviewed
    2. No exceptions to this deadline will be considered
