Overview

The La Verne Noyes Fellowship is intended to provide support to academically superior students in financial need, who are US citizens, pursuing a master's degree (except MBA) or Ph.D. and direct descendants of a World War I US Navy or Army veteran. Preference will be given to those students who have not previously received this award. Students must be enrolled full time (in a minimum of 12 units) in the academic quarter in which the student chooses to take the award. This award cannot be deferred to a subsequent academic year.

Award Info

$6,000 for one academic quarter. Award can be used to pay fees directly or can be paid as a stipend, or a combination of both. Stipends are subject to federal/state taxes; fee payments are not.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the La Verne Noyes Fellowship, the applicant must be a United States citizen pursuing a master's degree (except MBA) or Ph.D., be in good academic standing and be the direct descendant of a World War I US Navy or Army veteran and have financial need (based on a filed FAFSA).

Students from any academic unit who meet the criteria may apply. To be considered, all individual student applications must include the following:

• Documentation proving predecessor's World War I service - between the dates of April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1917
• A completed La Verne Noyes Fellowship Application Form
• The student's Curriculum Vitae
• A cover letter confirming U.S. citizenship and specifying the student's relationship to the veteran
• Photocopies of the respective veteran's honorable discharge papers

All AY 2011-12 application materials must be received in the Graduate Division by 5 pm on Monday, November 7, 2011. Applications must be submitted by the student.

Application Process

Student is to complete the application form, obtain the signature of the Graduate Associate Dean in respective school and send it to Susan Bertram along with the following:

• Copy of student's US passport or other official picture identification
• A letter of support from student's academic advisor or department chair
• Student's current Curriculum Vitae
• Statement of relationship to the member to the World War veteran, including family tree if possible

DEADLINE to submit applications to the Graduate Division by 5 pm on Monday, November 7, 2011.

• Incomplete application packets will not be reviewed
• No exceptions to this deadline will be considered
