Professional Development and the Individual Development Plan

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) has established six core competencies that should be incorporated into the professional development plans for all postdoctoral scholars. These competencies are:

  1. Discipline-specific conceptual knowledge
  2. Research skill development
  3. Communication skills
  4. Professionalism
  5. Leadership and management skills
  6. Responsible conduct of research

All new postdoctoral scholars are strongly encouraged to assess their own competencies in these areas and to establish plans for improving their skills during their UCI postdoctoral appointment. Your PI and other mentors are your primary resources for your professional development planning. The campus also provides workshops and other opportunities through the Graduate Resource Center.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)

The UCI Postdoctoral Scholar Individual Development Plan (IDP) is available to help postdoctoral scholars with professional development planning and for communicating with their PI.
