Graduate InterConnect Program

International students face additional challenges during their academic experience including a new culture, language differences, and developing new support networks. The Graduate InterConnect Program supports the successful transition of international graduate students and scholars. This program offers opportunities to network with others, practice English, and learn about American life and culture to ease the transition to UC Irvine.

Peer Mentors

An experienced graduate student mentor will help with your transition to the campus and the Irvine communities. You will receive communications from your mentor starting during the summer, prior to your arrival. Visit the Graduate InterConnect blog to read their bios and informative posts.

International Graduate Welcome and Orientation

The International Graduate Welcome and Orientation is designed to introduce international students to the campus and the resources specific to their experience. This orientation prepares students for the more in-depth Campuswide New Graduate Orientation the following day.

Taste of America Program

The Taste of America Program offers international graduate students the opportunity to have dinner with Americans in their homes. The program fosters new friendships to promote cultural learning and brings international graduate students into the local community. Dinners will begin in November.

Interested international graduate students and hosts may apply online to participate. After you complete your application, you will be contacted with your matches and logistical details.  

Graduate InterConnect Blog

You will find helpful information on the Graduate InterConnect blog about graduate student life written by Graduate InterConnect Peer Mentors. Topics include transportation, things to do in the local area, campus life, and more. On and off-campus resources are highlighted to assist with your student needs. Details about upcoming Graduate InterConnect events are updated thorughout the year.

ESL/ELL Academic Writing Series

This series of workshops addresses the specific grammar and language mechanics confronted by writers whose first language is not English. Taught in tandem with native speakers who excel in English writing, these workshop target the unique needs of first language speakers of Korean, Chinese, Farsi and Spanish to address problems common to their native language group. The workshops will take place in winter quarter. 

Graduate Resource Center

The Graduate Resource Center provides specialized workshops for international graduate students about campus and community resources, and U.S. culture. In addition, the GRC provides writing consultation services and English communication workshops, and helps students find the best resources on campus to develop their English skills.

International Center

The International Center also hosts events to support international students including:

  • International Coffee Hour - Fridays, 12:00pm-1:30pm, Counseling Center

  • Explore Southern California Trip series

  • Across the Bridge: A Global Dialogue series

  • ISTEPS (International Students Transitioning to Educational and Personal Success)
