Childbirth Accommodation and Child Care Reimbursement at UC Irvine
Overview
Consistent with UC Irvine’s priority for establishing and encouraging family-friendly policies, and in accordance with the proposals from UC Irvine’s Graduate Council, Academic Senate and Graduate Division, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Mike Gottfredson has established the following provisions for Childbirth Accommodation and Child Care Reimbursement on the UCI campus.
For Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs)
Parental Leave
The contract with the Academic Student Employees (ASE) provides salaried ASE’s (TAs) up to four weeks paid leave for childbirth. The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost is extending a benefit to eligible graduate students appointed as Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) that is similar to the ASE contract stipulations regarding childbearing and parental leave, i.e., women students in eligible GSR appointments will be provided up to four weeks of paid leave for childbearing.
Childbirth Accommodation Fund
The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost has established a central Childbirth Accommodation Fund to pay the salaries of women ASEs and GSRs during the time the student is on paid leave. The paid leave charged to the central Childbirth Accommodation Fund shall not exceed the four week maximum. The funding source for payment of GSR childbirth leave will be off-the-top of overhead funds.
Child Care Reimbursement Fund
The contract between the University and the ASEs also provides for a systemwide Child Care Reimbursement program for eligible ASEs. Each eligible ASE shall receive up to $300 per academic quarter for eligible child care expenses incurred during the ASE’s appointment period in the regular academic year, up to a maximum of $900 per year in reimbursement. The EVC has also established a central Child Care Reimbursement Fund to pay for reimbursable child care expenses. The Child Care Reimbursement program is for ASEs only and is not being extended to students with GSR appointments.
Both the Childbirth Accommodation Fund and the Child Care Reimbursement Fund are to be administered by the Graduate Division. The EVC will revisit the issues of parental leave and child care reimbursement funding in two years when activity data is available for analysis. The procedures for accessing the Childbirth Accommodation Fund and the Child Care Reimbursement Fund are contained in the attached documents.
