Graduate Advisor's Handbook
Graduate Advisor's Handbook
UCI’s Graduate Division (GD) is committed to the goal of providing convenient and user friendly information to our constituencies. Consequently, we have redesigned the web version of our Graduate Advisor’s Handbook. This handbook, intended for the use of UCI faculty and staff, provides implementation guidelines and procedures related to university policy as it affects the major aspects of graduate student education. The document is presented as nine sections which provide specific information on OGS Administration; Admissions; Fellowships and Grants; Graduate Student Employment; Enrollment and Registration; Academic Standards; Requirements for Graduate Degree Programs; Student Services; and Diversity Programs. We encourage all faculty and staff who work with or administratively oversee graduate student functions and activities to become familiar with these guidelines related to graduate education at UCI. All guidelines in this handbook derive from standing policies established by the University of California or the UCI Academic Senate’s Graduate Council. When using these guidelines, please bear in mind that they typically represent minimum standards or thresholds related to graduate education and individual academic schools or departments may establish even higher standards of academic expectation regarding graduate students across their academic unit.
You should also take some time to familiarize yourself with how to utilize the new technical features embedded within the Graduate Advisor’s Handbook. With improved technical capabilities, we have eliminated the need to provide one format for viewing and one for printing. The new single PDF version is easy to use and is best viewed by using Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. The new available features include the ability to: navigate with ease using interactive text, print sections or the entire document; a search function; and the ability to copy and paste specific text for use in another software application. This last function is especially helpful in responding by e-mail to a specific query from a colleague.
