Fall 2009 Workshops and Writing Services
The Graduate Resource Center (GRC) throughout the year offers a number of workshops focusing on professional development, writing and communication skills, and work/life balance.
For the month of November, the GRC will host a special series of writing workshops designed to assist students with academic papers and reports. A series of peer review sessions will also be offered to students applying for the Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Research Fellowship. All events listed below will be held in the GRC, unless otherwise noted. The GRC is located in Room C114 of the UC Irvine Student Center (Level 1, next to NACS@UCI). "WRITING THE COURSE PAPER" WORKSHOP SERIES
November 3, Tuesday, 2-3:30 p.m.
"Planning Your Paper"
This workshop will assist graduate students in formulating ideas for class papers. Participants should bring the syllabus from their coursework; the writing tutor will assist in generating ideas for topics and research plans.
November 11, Wednesday, 2-3:30 p.m.
"Writing a Literature Review"
A literature review is a key piece of any research paper. This workshop will assist graduate students in formulating a comprehensive lit review that suppors the paper thesis.
November 17, Tuesday, 2-3:30 p.m.
"Reviewing the First Draft"
This workshop will assist graduate students in the peer review process. Participants should bring a copy of their first draft to share. Proofreading skills and editing will be the focus, as will paper format and general structure.
November 23, Monday, 2-3:30 p.m.
"The Final Revisions"
This final workshop in the series is designed to polish and perfect the class paper. Final revisions will be discussed. Participants should be prepared to discuss their final draft and participate in peer review.
DOE FELLOWSHIP PEER REVIEW SESSIONS
These peer review sessions are designed to help DOE fellowship applicants with the two required essays. Applicants are invited to attend one or more of the following sessions with their drafts of Personal Statement and/or Proposed Plan of Research essay(s) for review by an advanced graduate student.

November 5, Thursday, 2-3:30 p.m.
November 9, Monday, 1-2:30 p.m.
November 12, Thursday, 2-3:30 p.m.
The deadline to apply for the DOE SCGF is Nov. 30, 2009. More information is available here.
WRITING TUTORIAL SERVICES
The GRC offers drop-in writing tutorial services during the following days/times. However, it may be necessary to wait if tutors are not immediately available. Due to high demand for these services, we encourage students to schedule an appointment with our writing tutors by calling 949-824-3849.
Mondays, 10 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m.
Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Wednesdays, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
