Agreement between the University and the UAW

All Academic Student Employee (ASE) appointments are covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University of California and the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW).  Click here for the UAW 2865 Membership Election Form.

Appointment Notifications

Appointment Notifications have been developed and are updated annually. To comply with Article 2 (Appointment Notification) of the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the UAW, appropriate notifications are required when UCI students are offered employment as Teaching Associates (Associates In), Teaching Assistants, Readers, and Tutors. The Appointment Notifications are to be attached to the appropriate UCI-AP forms.

Appointment Processing Dates, Deadlines & Reminders

Please refer to Student & Administrator Deadlines to ensure that student appointments and fellowships are input in a timely manner and students' fees/tuition credits are in place prior to the campus fee payment deadline for each quarter.

Inter-Session Dates

Employment of graduate students may not, in any combination, exceed 50% time during the academic quarter. Between quarters and during the summer recess, employment may be increased to 100% time.  

Service Limitation

In cases where employment beyond 50% time is deemed advisable by both the academic department and hiring department, an exception must be approved by the Graduate Dean.  Please refer to Instructions for Beyond 50% Employment.

Family Friendly Benefit

Childbirth Accommodation and Childcare Reimbursement

Consistent with UC Irvine’s priority for establishing and encouraging family-friendly policies, and in accordance with proposals from UC Irvine’s Graduate Council, Academic Senate and Graduate Division, the EVC's office has established provisions for Childbirth Accommodation and Childcare Reimbursement.

DepCare FSA for Academic Student Employees

The DepCare FSA for Academic Student Employees allows eligible ASEs to pay for eligible expenses for care of their child or eligible adult dependent on a pretax basis. For additional information on the DepCare FSA, refer to DepCare FSA for Academic Student Employees.
